On November 14, 2019 Tori and Jordan Levy met with Sinead Chilton and Jonathan Reid at School on Wheels to present a donation from the Shuki and Tori Levy Foundation. Sinead and Jonathan gave us a tour of their Skid Row facility, where we had the opportunity to see the good work they do for our local community.
In the broader discussion of homelessness, people don’t often consider its devastating impact on children. At School on Wheels we learned that one in every 20 children in California is homeless. On Skid Row alone, located in Downtown Los Angeles, there are hundreds of homeless children. Kids who face homelessness are nine times more likely to repeat a grade, and four times more likely to drop out of school entirely.
At the School on Wheels Skid Row center, homeless children can receive tutoring from volunteers free of charge. The center includes quiet study areas for the children, as well as play areas. Overall, the center is incredibly welcoming; the staff members are very professional, friendly, and passionate to help. Not only does School on Wheels offer free one-on-one weekly tutoring, they also provide school supplies for the children. The organization has a scholarship program which students can apply for. These scholarships can be used for colleges, educational summer programs, apprenticeships or enrichment classes. These opportunities can be life changing, and educational help in general can also open up many more doors for these children.
Our foundation is committed to supporting educational endeavors that spread positivity, and School on Wheels does just that. We understand the significance of education, and believe that every child deserves the opportunity to get the best education possible, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Tori Levy was previously a volunteer tutor with School on Wheels, and we are proud to continue supporting their mission to enhance educational opportunities for children who are experiencing homelessness. Last year, we had the honor of co-hosting and sponsoring an event called Caring and Sharing with Spin Master toy company and School on Wheels. We look forward to continuing to support their extraordinary work, and we encourage others in our community to do the same. Learn more about School on Wheels here.
